Defense Industry Undersecretariat had announced in 2006 a limited architectural design competition for the International terminal building of 10 million travellers/year at the Sabiha Gökçen Airport in İstanbul. The competition terms states the specific space for each area: land and air sides, service areas, check-in hall, duty free hall, waiting halls, luggage retreaval section, and offices where the total area apart from the car park block to be around 180 000 sq m. Also on the air side 16 passanger bridges for various sized planes were to be placed. The presentation is the final application project chosen to be in the competition bearing all the alterations demanded by the client. Following the competition the terminal was demanded to service not just internationaül lines but national flights as well, trade and offices, airport hotel and a VIP building was comprised into the project thus in totall reaching a construction area of 227 000 sqm.
A steel construction this size to be completed in 18 months and put into service is a signigicant indication for the speedy building of steel structures. The new International Terminal of Sabiha Gökçen airport in Turkey is one of the largest and most prestigious steel constructions of late revealing the high quality of steelworks, architectured and structured design and manufacture in Turkey.
