M.ARCH. Orhan ULUDAĞ: “Advantages of steel need to be reflected to the design”

In Turkey, economy comes first, a development might be expected if the economic difference between reinforced concrete and steel structure is reduced. The increase in the prices of conventional construction workmanship may also make steel more preferable. In which structures steel is preferred, yes, in industrial structures, everyone prefers steel without objection in the roofs of cultural structures and sports arenas where large clear spans are passed. Even the ones that can be solved with reinforced concrete are solved with steel, it has been such a habit but if you desire to construct the whole structure in steel, there are two handicaps; the first is the cost and the second is trained, qualified workforce. You can find many teams for formwork but it is not easy to find teams familiar with steel construction. Therefore, the easy way is taken out. Training is required for not taking the easy way, more people are required for this work. When this problem is solved, additional returns in steel will also be affordable. Timesaving and sustainability can be discussed and lots of structures may be transformed into steel. I observe that there is a considerable trend towards steel abroad, although it changes from country to country. The reason for the use of steel in these countries is again economical in my perspective, workmanship costs for traditional methods is also high where steel construction gets the upper hand. Furthermore, there are advances in construction technology, for instance fiber technology. It is also not subject to corrosion but cost is the obstruction for widespread use, it may become more utilizable 10 years later when it might be cheaper.
