Fire Risk Map of High Rise Buildings in Istanbul

This paper focuses on the egress analysis of 1167 high-rise residential buildings in Istanbul and derives an equation to estimate egress time based on building height and number of occupants per floor. An agent based egress software buildingExodus is utilized to conduct a parametric study for various high-rise buildings. In addition, a fire scenario originating from a living room space is simulated to observe the effect of heat and smoke on the egress speed of occupants, especially in the stairwells. In a fire emergency, a successful intervention by the fire department also needs to be ensured in order to speed up egress, slow down the fire spread and extinguish the fire.
The contrast between the total evacuation time of the occupants and the arrival time of firefighting rescue services was used to quantify a risk index for high-rise residential buildings. During a normal period when traffic is not expected, 20% of these buildings are estimated to have longer fire brigade arrival times than the building evacuation times. At rush hour periods, however, up to 70% of these buildings had longer fire brigade arrival times. The results show the vulnerable buildings in the city at risk of an unsuccessful fire brigade intervention during a potential fire incident which can also be used to establish future fire stations to improve preparedness.
