The main contractor of Giresum Çotanak Sports Complex, Siyahkalem Mühendislik İnşaat, started the construction of the project consisting of various structures with its stadium compliant for international competitions with the capacity of 22.000, olympic pool building with the capacity of 1.200, training grounds, shops, indoor and outdoor parking in 2016. Çotanak Arena Project constructed in Giresun (which is renowned with its hazelnuts) on a land of 120 acres having a construction area of 113.540 m2 bears the signatures of Bora Soykut for concept design and Azaksu Mimarlık for construction architecture drawings.

ALTERNATIVE DESIGN
Replacing the steel tube section trusses on the roof with tension bars and removing some of the struts in the trusses resulted in less dead load and consequently the diameters of tube section elements in the cantilever trusses were minimised. Therefore, a significant saving in materials was achieved. Stadium steel roof of 3465 tonnes in total with 2420 tonnes of primary load bearing roof trusses was reduced by 650 tonnes (26%) with Meinhardt’s alternative design and optimized to 2815 tonnes in total including the secondary steel with 1790 tonnes of primary roof trusses.

Connection calculations have first been sized with calculation by hand based on the essentions in the specification and subsequently confirmed and developed with analysis in detail through finite elements method using IDEASTATICA® software. It was decided that the truss upper flange joint connections under tension to be detailed with cross-piece detail and truss lower flange joint connections under compression to be detailed with compact facade plate for both architectural aesthetics and ease in assembly.

FIRST STADIUM
Various Project meetings were held with TOKI and EPP officials in the short period of three months and the required permits were obtained without delay in the construction schedule. Another characteristic of this project is that it is the first project constructed with tension bars and approved by TOKI. It was targeted to plan the connection details with no structural welding on site during the whole detailing process. No welding was performed on site despite the total quantity of 1790 tonnes of steel and approximately 33.000 bolts for the primary load-bearing steel design under Meinhardt responsibility. All steel members assembled on site were designed with bolt connections for a fast-track assembly.

Engineering, detailing and all shop drawing preparation for the steel roof secondary steel elements (catwalks, scoreboard, membrane roof frames, gutters etc.) were performed by Örtaş Çelik. Steel structure execution grade was executed as EXC3 with C3 corrosion category as per TS EN ISO 12944 specification and High 15+ years durability paint system.
