Economy Minister Zafer ÇAşLAYAN: “Steel Sector is one of many sectors Turkey is a contender as the world leader.”

This is an important sector, the first sectorial study as a minister was in the iron and steel sector. By its own this sector is the reason for the study and not just its capacity. This sector supplies a significant portion of raw materials to others.

“... A meeting of this significance is a first in Turkey. On the one hand we are sseriously analysing the production and manufacture and on the other hand we are considering our future targets.
... This is an important sector, the first sectorial study as a minister was in the iron and steel sector. By its own this sector is the reason for the study and not just its capacity. This sector supplies a significant portion of raw materials to others.
... When a shrinking of the Turkish economy is experienced this sector also is affected, thus it can be deemed as a crucial gauge for Turkey’s economy. A sector like steel, as we say. A sector such as this should become more value added, with lower input costs, using the national resources as much as possible. This is what is preferable, a lower dependency abroad insteel production. For we do have the means.
... Historical Silk Road traverses over Turkey. From Pekin in China to London passes through Turkey. The most important route for taking the energy resources found in the north east and the east of Turkey to the Western World passes through Turkey. East has the resources of power and this is conveyed via Turkey to the West where it is needed the most. Hence the NOBUKO project. For petroleum Baku-Ceyhan, especially Tbilisi pipe line and railway projects, which denotes the importance attributed to Turkey n regards of logistics. In such a climate, I should once more express that the iron and steel sector’s success, its rising significance globally, increase in exports, increase in investments are our goals. Where historical Silk Road was now is the international Steel Road, which is very appopriate in my opinion. Turkey is in a very important position, on a very significant route. This exellence is to be shared with its friends. This study is a first. And I and my Ministry and all the rest of the affiliates will be supporting it whole heartedly. This is not just for this year, but will be continued in coming years. For we know that the Turkish Steel sector is up for the job, and this fact is well established in these studies. As the Government we believe in and trust the sector. Turkey’s perspective on various sectors are clear. One of the leading sectors which Turkey will excell is going to be the ıron and steel. However we have to remember that today the competition is fierce and conditions are serious which will inevitably grow even harder by time, thus every minute detail is important. We have to acknowledge that today is more difficult than yesterday, and tomorrow will be even harder than today.“
