Arch.Doğan TEKELİ: Steel Construction needs Intelligence!

“There used to be a fear about steel constructions. Reinforced concrete was built in the most primitive way, but steel needs a planning, a study. Needs to use some intelligence, to work, which all together mean discipline. How a stone coated building needs discipline when compared to a plastered building, there is module and scale, right, but you apply the plaster, that’s all, reinforced concrete is like that too, has less discipline, of course when you do it properly, it is also disciplined, but it does not need that much study. But in steel, things are not like that, steel needs study. Coating, siding, installation need much more attention. This is something that makes the architects, builders think. Also the control, there is the control, the test of the welding, but as far as ı see, Turkey is far beyond these.
I am happy about the point that we came, but still lots of our architects and engineers have to know that steel construction technology is not something to fear. I mean, this has to start from schools. But nowadays at schools, education is more focused on feelings and art, rather than knowledge on architecture. So, they do not know the construction technology. After graduation, for example for us, it takes two years to become an effective worker. That’s why, it’s good to teach philosophy and thought of architecture etc. but what Turkish society need is engineers who build correct buildings. Everyone can not be Frank Gery . Also should not be. Thus the focus of education, is to train the technical people that Turkish society needs. Steel construction knowledge takes great part in this.”
