In 2017, faced with the unfortunate events of the natural phenomenon known as “El Niño Costero”, which resulted in hundreds of bridges being damaged and even collapsed. Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications declared public tender in 2018.
BERD (Bridge Engineering Research & Design) from Portugal was awarded for 150 bridges of about 6.000 tonnes. For this prestigious project, BERN decided to work with Turkish company MİM Engineering Construction Steel Industry Incorporation to manufacture and erect the modular bridges. Fabrication of 148 modular bridges (7,444 tons in total) which for various spans between 16.80 and 61.60 meters have been completed in 8.5 months.
Peruvian government provided the following advantages by deciding on these modular bridges:
• About 25% save in cost in comparison with previous tenders of 15-60 meters span bridges.
• Ability to buy from any location in the world because of its modular and containerised structures.
• Capability to deploy the bridges to the needed locations in case of emergency.
• Save in completion time of fabrication and erection.
